Taikang Art Museum will hold its opening exhibition "Entry into the World: Chinese Contemporary Art since the 20th Century" on 22 August 2023, which will run until 12 January 2024. Relying on the collection of Taikang Insurance Group, 101 works covering a century of history have been selected for the exhibition, including painting, installation, photography, video and other media types, presenting China's contemporary art since the 20th century from the two main aspects of "art and people" and "art and society". The exhibition focuses on the development of Chinese modern and contemporary art in the 20th century.
The exhibition focuses on the "world-entry characteristics" of Chinese contemporary art in the 20th century, and explores the historical process of how artists have closely connected their selves and works of art with the social reality. The theme of the exhibition, "Entry into the World", stems from the exploration of two aspects of art creation, namely the liberation of the artist's individuality and the close connection between art and society and reality. Individual emancipation refers to the fact that artists are no longer bound by the constraints of modern society, and are free to express their thoughts and emotions and pursue their personal goals of artistic creation. The close connection between art and society and reality is reflected in the fact that art works reflect social changes and people's concern for reality.
The exhibition is based on a broad historical perspective, taking the wave of global expansion brought about by Western industrial civilisation in the 19th century, as well as the transformation of Chinese society and changes in the education system in the 20th century as the backdrop, and observing how artists, as representatives of modern intellectuals, responded to the changes of the times. An important section of the exhibition is "The Artist", which will display approximately 20 self-portraits and portraits of the artist. Faced with the challenge of Western expansion, Chinese society in the late Qing Dynasty undertook both internal and external reforms, including the abolition of the imperial examination system in 1905 and the subsequent reform of the education system, which led to a comprehensive social and cultural transformation. In the course of a century of social change, Chinese contemporary artists have demonstrated a radical shift in consciousness and thought behind the evolution of artistic techniques and language. With their unique creative techniques and language, they have demonstrated their thinking and exploration of the far-reaching effects of society, culture, and the economy, as well as their distinct difference from the traditional literati and scholarly state of creativity.
The exhibition focuses on the self-generation, innovation and evolution of Chinese art in the context of the twentieth century, showing how artists explore and form the diversified face of Chinese contemporary art between local traditions and Western influences. In addition, the exhibition presents artists from different periods of time exploring issues such as portrait, body, reality, life, lyricism, vanguard, etc. It breaks the limitations of the intergenerational research methodology, and presents the viewers with several generations of artists' views on the issues of "art", "human being", and "society" in a cross-cutting manner. Through the exhibition, it presents the audience with the continuous and in-depth thinking of several generations of artists on the relationship between "art", "human being" and "society".
